Gum Disease & Oral Cancer Screening
As part of your preventive care, Dr. Jeff Olson will perform a gum examination to check your mouth for any signs of periodontal disease. This will help us to catch gum disease in the early stages of development, when we can easily halt and reverse the damage to your oral structures. We invite you to call 952-435-0355 today to make your appointment at Oak Ridge Dental and learn more about gum examinations in Burnsville, Minnesota.
Periodontal disease is a degenerative disease caused by infection in the gums. When plaque builds up on your teeth, the harmful bacteria in your mouth irritate and inflame your gum tissues, causing a mild form of gum disease known as gingivitis. If untreated, gingivitis develops into a more serious condition known as periodontitis. Periodontitis usually involves gum recession and bone loss, and will eventually lead to tooth loss if unchecked.
Symptoms of periodontal disease include:
Unusually red or swollen gums
Tender gums, or other oral pain
Bleeding while brushing or flossing
Receding gums
Loose or separated teeth
Pus between the gums and teeth
Sores in your mouth
Halitosis, or persistent bad breath
Changes in your bite
Changes in the fit of dentures or other removeable appliances
If our dentist finds that you have periodontal disease, he will recommend a course of treatment to halt the progression of this condition and begin restoring your oral health. Treatments may be as simple as improving your at home care and receiving additional professional cleanings, or as complex as laser therapy. If needed, we will recommend a specialist for you.
